Middle School Visit

Greetings from Room 10!

First of all, I would like to extend my sincere thanks for the thoughtful stars and gifts that were waiting in our room upon our return from the Middle School.  In addition to two pairs of "musical" socks, I was honored to receive a star with kind words written on them from each of our 24 students! Also, thank you for all the fruit and veggies the children brought me throughout the week.  All I can say is, "WOW!"
Our Middle School visit went very well.  Upon our arrival, we were greeted by Principal Doemel and a video introducing the 5th graders to the BCMS 6th grade teachers.  It was followed by a tour of the middle school building and lunch.  The afternoon was spent attending four classes:  Earth Science, World Language, Computer Lit and Social Studies. We ended our visit with a performance by the 6th grade band.
We leave promptly at 8:30am on Wednesday morning. Luggage drivers should pull up in front of the building so we can load the children's luggage. Everyone else should park in the lot and walk to the front of the school.
Enjoy the photos I took during our visit.                               Take care, Lester Betor & Class

Maria's River

Dear Families of Room 10,
Last night was the final performance of Maria's River.  It has been an honor and a privilege to work on this production with such a wonderful cast and crew.  This play has special meaning to me because I wrote the vast majority of it while spending time with my dad this past summer.  I remember sitting at his kitchen table while he was resting and having him yell to me, "Hey Les, did you finish the play yet?"  And at that point, I would give him an update, run a particular line by him, or share one of the songs I selected.  As you know, my dad passed away on December 17th, and I know he was looking down on all of us and singing along when the children performed.  He was my both my greatest fan and honest critic.  I quietly dedicated last night's performance to him.
Because I wasn't in a position to take photos during this process, I am attaching another photographer's pictures.  Enjoy and stay warm this weekend!    Lester B. & Class

Valentine's Day Party

Dear Families of Room 10,
I must take a moment to explain why I haven't posted anything to our class Blog since January.  The District imposed a new filter which prevented me from accessing my own Blog.  I am now permitted to post again, so I am starting with photos of our Valentine's Day Party.  Thank you to Mrs. Metcalf who kindly took the photos and shared them with me.  Apologies to Dominic who was out sick the day of our party.  Enjoy!

DARE Graduation

Greetings from Room 10!

This morning we celebrated the completion of DARE with a graduation ceremony. Town board members, our Town Supervisor and Police Department staff were in attendance. From our class, Tyler Goldberg presented his DARE essay to the assembly and Payton Gordinier read the names of our graduates. It was a very nice ceremony.  I am attaching our class photo for your enjoyment.

There was NO Weekly Reflection again this week because of the upcoming long weekend. Don't forget that we have our regular Maria's River play rehearsals on Tuesday.  Children should continue to run lines. You'd be surprised by how quickly they forget the lines they already memorized. Also, January 25, 26 and 27 are half-days for parent conferences. Dismissal will be at 11:30am. At this point there are a few families who have not selected a conference day and time on Sign-Up Genius. Please be sure to sign up for a conference.

Have a restful long weekend!                                                Sincerely, Lester Betor

5th Grade UPDATE!

Good Morning Parents of Room 10,

Last week, the children participated in "An Hour of Code" in Room 10.  They were very excited about this opportunity and enjoyed learning how to code a computer game. After they finished coding Minecraft, they were free to explore other coding opportunities.  It was a successful endeavor.

DATES, DATES AND MORE DATES TO REMEMBER...

Tomorrow (providing the snow doesn't cause a school closing) everyone (cast and crew) will be participating in our initial read-through of their class play, Maria's River.  Your child should bring a second snack tomorrow, which will be eaten at 3:20pm.  IF IT IS CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER, THE SNOW DAY IS TUESDAY, DECEMBER 13TH.  Please pick up your Thespian outside the music room in the lower level of the school promptly at 5:00pm.

The DARE essay is due on or before December 23rd. The essays may be hand-written or typed.  I have given the children three 45-minute time frames to work on their essay at school. Now, they should complete the essays at home. The DARE Graduation will be Friday, January 13th at 9:45am.

Our Holiday party will be held on Friday, December 23rd at 9:45am. We will be having breakfast again.  Feel free to join us, if you'd like. Our Room Parents will be sending out a request for both treats for the party and goodies for making Gingerbread Houses.  We will be joining our 2nd grade buddies on Tuesday, December 20th at 9:45am to build the gingerbread houses.

Join us for the Crayfish Learning Fair on Thursday, December 22nd at 9:45am in the cafeteria. We are showcasing the children's knowledge of crayfish.  You can stay for the full hour and walk around to see all of the projects, or stay for just a few minutes to see your child's project.  It's up to you.

When we said that 5th grade was a busy year, we weren't kidding!!!  Take care, Lester B. and class

As I write this, the children are enjoying popcorn and fruit.  Thank you to the Luntz family and the Metcalf family for sending in the delicious fruit.  We are watching "Shrek's Thrilling Tales" compliments of Mrs. O'Shea.
On Monday, you are all welcome to come to our Halloween Party.  It begins at 10:30am.  I will make sure to take pictures of the event.
I am including photos from Crazy Hat/Hair Day!  Enjoy!  Lester B. and Class

TWIN DAY!

Dear Parents of Room 10,
Today was Twin Day in our classroom.  In addition to having popcorn and a movie (It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown), Abby sent in apples for the children.  It was a very nice day in Room 10.  Next week we will have spelling again.  I look forward to some normalcy in our week.  Having two days off was nice, but it throws us off our pace.  Heads Up!  Our Halloween Party will be on Monday, October 31st from 10:30-11:30am.  Just a reminder, if you sign up to send in a treat, please make sure it is nut and sesame seed free.  Enjoy the photos of the children watching their movie.
