Dear Parents of Room 10,

            It has been another very busy week in Room 10.  We’ve reached another 5^th grade milestone with the completion of the children’s whale report and project.  Please join us next Friday morning, March 22^nd at 9:45 for our Whale Museum.  We are joining Mrs. Ward’s class in the cafeteria for this wonderful whale event!  Be sure to bring your camera!

            We have already begun preparing for the whale unit test.  I expect to administer the test sometime the week of March 25^th.  I have already been asked to hold a “Whale Bee” in preparation for this test.  For some reason the kids LOVE “Bees!”

            Speaking of “Bees!” the BOU Community Spelling Bee has been reschedule for Wednesday, March 27^th at 7pm at the Middle School.  Mrs. Clarkson, Mrs. Landrigan, Mrs. Bonacquist, Mrs. Platek and I have been honing our spelling skills in preparation for this event.  We hope that you will all come out to support the BOU and our Slingerlands team.

            Have you heard about the Public Service Announcements that the children are developing?  Mr. Viglucci introduced the persuasive writing unit by sharing a variety of heavily televised Public Service Announcements.  Next week the children, who have been placed in groups of three, will be filming their PSAs.  This is step one in our persuasive writing unit…next stop…infomercials.  The unit will culminate with the children writing an editorial.

            In reading, the children are still enjoying their ocean-themed books.  Be sure to ask your child about the book he/she is reading and how its main character has changed since the beginning of the novel.  The reading response journal entries have been getting better, but I am still looking for more thoughtful and complete responses.

            As a reminder, next Wednesday, March 20^th, is a half-day for parent-teacher conferences.  Have a wonderful weekend and see you all next Friday!                                              Lester B & class

Happy "Cat in the Hat" Day!

Dear Parents of Room 10,

             

            Happy “Cat in the Hat” Day!  Today, in honor of the Dr. Seuss, the children performed a “Flash Mob” for the Kindergarteners, First Graders and a couple of other classes.  They did an amazing job, and I know they had a ball doing it.  Mrs. Bonacquist, Mrs. Krupner and the teachers thoroughly enjoyed their performance. 

            At this point, your child should be working on his/her tri-fold poster or 3-D model at home.  They are working on their reports in school.  They have also worked on creating a bar graph in the computer room.  The vast majority of children were able to complete this project in school.  However, a few students indicated that they were not able to do it.  In this case, they will be required to complete the bar graph, either on paper or on your home computer.  The final report and whale project will be due March 15^th.  I am hoping to have our Whale Museum on Friday, March 22^nd at 9:45am.  I will provide details in our next Weekly Reflection.

            The Wax Museum last night was truly incredible.  The children did such a great job researching, writing, memorizing and speaking.  The costumes were adorable and the enthusiasm was unmatched.  Thank you to everyone who brought treats to the bake sale and who purchased treats.  All of the proceeds from both the Wax Museum and the bake sale will go to the Marillac Shelter in honor of Dorothy McDonald. 

            In reading, the children have selected ocean themed books.  I will be meeting with the book groups to discuss the novel as we move through the chapters.  Each week, the children will be writing two responses to what they have read.  I have given them a schedule of assignments that we will review prior to each assignment.  I love these books because, in addition to an ocean setting, they all deal with the main characters’ change and growth.

            If you have a chance, come to the “Crazy” basketball game tonight at 6pm at the high school.  Mrs. Clarkson, Mrs. Bush, Mrs. Goff and Mrs. MacMillan will all be playing.

Wax Museum UPDATE! and DARE Graduation INVITE!

                                               Wax Museum REMINDER 
LOGISTICS:  The Wax Museum to benefit the Marillac Shelter in honor of Principal Dorothy McDonald will be held Thursday evening, February 28th from 6:30-7:30.  Please have your 5th grader at school no later than 6:15.  Your child should come dressed in their costumes.  Doors to the museum will open promptly at 6:30.  Also remember to bring your nickels!!!  The children will not come alive unless they hear that "clink" in their can.  

CANS:  Speaking of "clink in their can"...  Don't forget that your child will need something to collect the nickels they earn for their performance.  Coffee cans work well, but feel free to be creative! 

COSTUMES & PHOTOGRAPHS:  Please make sure that your child's costume is brought to school no later than Tuesday, February 26^th.  I plan to take photographs Tuesday or Wednesday for my slide show and blog.  Also, we may have a dress rehearsal on Wednesday or Thursday and have our buddy class come in and watch us perform.  Once pictures are taken and the dress rehearsal is concluded, the children will take their costumes home so that they can come dressed and ready to go Thursday evening!

BAKE SALE:  If you have volunteered to send in a healthy snack or sweet treat for the bake sale, you may drop off your items either in my classroom during the day, or you may bring it the evening of the Wax Museum, whichever is more convenient!  There will be tables set-up by the windows near the living room.  I will be manning the bake sale table.  Come hungry!

Whale Research and Wax Museum Preparation

     This week the "name of the game" was Whale Research.  The students had a few opportunities this week to conduct research on their whale.  Whale assignments were made by a random draw early in the week.  After that, the children had time in class to use a variety of books Mrs. Collen let us borrow from the library.  In addition, they used computers both during our lab time and during library.  There are four main areas the children must research:  1.)  Physical features and characteristics; 2.)  Habitat and migration path;  3.)  Life cycle and family behaviors; and 4.)  Eating habits and food.  I gave the children labeled sheets on which they can gather their notes.  This week the children will have additional computer lab time and access to research materials.  Following are several pictures of the children in our computer lab.

     At this point the children have completed their one-minute speech and their wax museum poster.  They look amazing!  I am very proud of how hard each of them worked to research, write, and create.  Last week I sent home information about the Wax Museum (February 28th from 6:30-7:30), a request for sweet treats or healthy snacks and a reminder about costumes.  This is a fun-filled evening for the children and the participants, but it also has a philanthropic component.  All proceeds from both the children's performances and the bake sale will support the Marillac Shelter in memory of Dorothy McDonald, Clarksville's beloved principal. 
     Thank you to everyone who was able to come to our ABC book viewing.  As a working parent, I know all too well how difficult it is to attend school functions during the day.  The children's ABC books will be coming home this week for you to enjoy.  I hope you were able to read through their memoirs which were given to your child on Friday.  It was a great celebration!
     As you are aware, there was no "Weekly Reflection" sent home on Friday, and there will not be one this coming Friday either.  Instead, I will update our blog as I am doing right now.  With the early dismissal on Friday AND winter break the following week, it didn't make sense for me to send home a hard copy of the weeks' events.  I hope the blog is a good way to update you and provide you with a glimpse into the happenings in Room 10.

Whales, Whales, Whales...and Popcorn!

Dear Parents of Room 10,

            It’s been a very busy week!  Whales have been our focus. We drew whales to scale (one inch for every foot) and finished painting them.  They look gorgeous! The children are very proud of this project and look forward to you stopping by to see them swimming, breaching and sounding outside our classroom.  A special thanks to Mrs. Nakamura, Mrs. Martucci and Mrs. Kee who rolled up their sleeves and took the “Narwhals by the horns.”  The whole process ran very smoothly and took only 1½ hours to complete.   Following are a few pictures from this great project.  

            As you know, in language arts our focus has been “close reading.”  Earlier this week the children read a non-fiction article on popcorn and a poem on popcorn.  This morning they are re-reading the pieces, and writing an essay in which they must synthesize the two pieces and site textual evidence from both to support their opinion.  It is a good skill, but one that does not come easy.  We will continue to practice comparing, contrasting, and synthesizing!

            We are well underway with preparing for the Wax Museum, which will be on the evening of February 28^th.  The children have just about completed their one-minute speeches and some have begun memorizing them.  We will work on the poster next week.  As I mentioned to the kids, I will be able to print one black and white, 8x10 picture for their poster.  If they want more than that, or that want a color picture, they will need to get them at home.  I understand that many of you have already begun putting together a costume.  Please don’t spend a lot of money on this.  We always have a wide-range of costumes at the Wax Museum.  My focus for this project is the ability to speak clearly, audibly and enthusiastically in front of peers and family.  It is not to see who can have the best costume.

Please join us next Friday, February 8^th to celebrate the completion of our ABC books.  Stop in anytime between 9:45 and 10:45 to read the children’s books and provide positive comments.  This is meant to be a casual event to celebrate the completion of this project.  If you are unable to come, please don’t worry.  I will be sending home their books Friday.

DARE essays are due next Friday, February 8^th.  They can be written on essay paper that I have in the classroom or typed.

Dear Parents of Room 10,

            This was a short, cold and productive week!  The children worked hard as we finalized the ABC Book and began two new writing assignments; their Wax Museum speech (which will be done in school) and their DARE essay (which will be finished at home).

            Whales.  Whales.  Whales.  This week we began the Whale Unit with the first two lessons.  After making their Whale Unit divider, we focused on the differences and similarities between whales and fish.  On Thursday I shared a power point presentation introducing seven whale behaviors.  Ask your child to name and explain each of the seven behaviors.  As I explained to the children, these are just seven of many behaviors whales exhibit.  Next week we will begin the whale-to-scale project where we will do scale drawings (1 inch: 1 foot) of a variety of both toothed and baleen whales.  This is a fun and very mess project…and I LOVE IT!

            As I mentioned earlier, the children have selected their Wax Museum subject, we have conducted research and have written facts in their writer’s notebook.  I gave the children directions for both the one-minute speech and the poster.  Except for putting together a costume for the Wax Museum, THIS PROJECT WILL BE DONE ENTIRELY IN SCHOOL.  The Wax Museum is scheduled for the evening of February 28^th, and the proceeds will benefit the Marillac Shelter.     

            The children had their final DARE class with Officer Dave Harrington on Wednesday.  Officer Harrington explained that he is in the process of planning their DARE graduation for sometime in late February, although an actual date has not yet been established.  As soon as I am given the date, I will let you know.  I suspect it will be a morning event, as the last few graduations have been at 9:45am.

            I am happy to announce that I have an extra pair of hands in the classroom every afternoon.  Matt Viglucci, my former 5th grade student and a current Lab School Senior is doing his internship in Room 10.  He wants to focus on writing, so he spent the week finalizing the students’ memoirs.  He also did an outstanding job reading aloud to the children.  Welcome Matt!

            Is your child reading a minimum of 30 minutes nightly?  I did a “State of the Class” Thursday to get an idea of where each of them is with Betor’s Bulls-Eye.  At this point your child should have read a minimum of 15 books.  Please check in with your child to see if he/she is on the right track.                                                 Stay warm!  Lester Betor & Class

Week of January 7th - Our first full-week back!

            Happy New Year to everyone!  We are off to a terrific start in 2013.  It’s so hard for me to believe that we have already completed over four months of school.  It actually makes me quite sad to realize how quickly this year is going by.  I know I have mentioned this in the past, but this is a truly special group of children with whom I thoroughly enjoy working.  I view each and every day as a gift.

            This week has been very productive as the respiratory unit begins to wind down and the unit test is on the horizon.  They will be tackling the test on Wednesday afternoon.  I have given them a study guide, walked through the test format and assured them that they have all the tools they need to be successful.  I have encouraged them to begin studying, so you should see them review their respiratory notes over the weekend and early into next week.  On Thursday we will begin the long-awaited whale unit.

            In writing the children have been working tirelessly on their ABC books.  Most of them are about half-way through the alphabet.  I have seen some amazing illustrations and have enjoyed reading their informational texts.  We will continue to work on this project at least through next week.  If you see it coming home, it’s because your child is behind.  Otherwise, I fully anticipate that they will be finished by Friday.

            In reading our focus has been author’s purpose.  My small group instruction focused on the three reasons an author writes.  Ask your child to name the three “purposes,” and to give you examples of each.  Today we began a whole-class “close reading” of two related articles; one from TFK and the other from the Times Union.  And guess what the topic was!  Yes, it was cursive writing!!  It was fun to use an article that the children were a part of.

We conducted a bit of research on Wednesday in anticipation of the wax museum project that will be held the end of February.  The children are selecting some interesting characters from the Western Hemisphere.  Each child will become a person in history (either dead or alive), and will be asked to write (and memorize) a one-minute speech as if they were that person.  In addition, they will create a poster to showcase the contributions their character has made.  All of this work is done in school.  The only thing you will need to be involved in is creating a costume.  This is really an amazing experience; details to follow.
